Review of Change

Principles of nature (of change):

  1. matter
  2. form
  3. privation
I still don't get substantial change

Aristotle: What is the Soul?

Soul is "something of a body"

  • soul isn't body itself
  • like health, soul is never found without body
  • soul seems like it would be an accident, but losing it (death) is a substantial change
  • therefore soul must be related to substance
  • substance is substantial form and prime matter
    • soul must be one of
      1. composite of matter and form - we don't point to "souls" in themselves
      2. prime matter - soul causes actuality, not potency
      3. substantial form!!!
  • matter is potency
  • form makes matter "actual"
