Sexuality

(reproduction 101: male is external, female is internal)

  • menstrual cycle - lining of uterus is released
    • ovarian cycle - point during menstrual cycle in which egg is released
    • Endometrial cycle
    • # lining of uterus starts to grow
    • # lining thickens
  • pregnancy - miracle of life!

Issues

Know for

  • What is sex? ()
  • What is a virgin? (someone who hasn't had sex)
  • Can a person be sexually active and a virgin? (no)

Responsibility

Understand that sex is natural and healthy (when in the right place)
Communicate personal feelings and thoughts to your partner and vice versa (be honest)
partners
Disclosure of intentions
Mutually agree upon sexual activities and contraception (big no-no)
Accept consequences

Abstinence is the only 100% safe sex (AGREED!)

Infections

  • 65 million people are living with viral/incurable STI
  • Over 50% will have STI at some point
  • US has highest rate of STIs in industrialized world.

Locally

  • 58% of TAMU have engaged in sex in last 12 months (underreported)
    • 3.6% of TAMU have been treated for STIs (1800 students)
    • HPV and herpes are most common (viral/incurable)
  • 52% use contraception...
  • 80-90% of people graduating High School have had vaginal sex


Inhabitance

Lesions
syphilis, herpes, genital warts
Cervix/Urethra/Vagina (secretions)
gonorrhea trichomoniasis, chlamydia, also genital warts, herpes, HIV

HIV, hepatitis B

Transmitted through oral/anal/vaginal sex, skin-skin contact (esp. genital), and blood-blood contact

Asymptomatic (no symptoms) — the silent epidemic

Bacterial

Treatable/Curable

Chlamydia

  • most frequently reported bacterial STI
  • abnormal clear discharges

Gonorrhea

  • very common infection
  • known as "drip" or "clap"
  • not-clear discharge

Syphilis

  • 3 stages: primary, secondary, tertiary/late
  • treated with penicillin
  • Primary: small, painless sore
  • Secondary: non-itchy rash on trunk and extremities (contagious)
  • Tertiary: affects brain; brain atrophy


Viral

Treatable, but incurable

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

  • 100 different strains (30 are sexually transmitted)
  • primarily spread through contact
  • vaccine available

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

  • 2 types: HSV-1 and HSV-2
  • blisters around genital area
  • more common in women

Hepatitis B

  • attacks liver
  • vaccine available

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

  • Leads to AIDS
  • No cure, no vaccine
  • treated with drug "cocktails" to prevent AIDS and strengthen immune system


Parasitic

Critters that crawl

Pubic Lice or "crabs"

  • Intense itching

Scabies

  • Tiny mite
  • Zigzag burrowing under skin
  • spread through skin-skin contact

Trichomoniasis or "Trich"

  • Yellow-green, frothy discharge


Prevention

Get tested and vaccinated, abstain, etc.


Contraception

STAY AWAY!

Hormone release:

  • "The pill"
  • Mini-pill
  • 3-year implant
  • Intro-uterine implants
  • Plan B; morning-after
  • Vaginal ring
  • Patches

Etc.

  • Condom (for male and female)
  • Sterilization: tubal ligation (women); vasectomy (male)
  • Pulling out
  • Implants
