| Parts | ||
|---|---|---|
| City | Soul | Body |
| Rulers | Reason | Head |
| Auxiliary Guardians | Spirit (protective, lively) | Heart |
| Craftsmen/Workers | Appetites and Desires | Stomach, Gonads |
| Virtues | ||
|---|---|---|
| Virtue | City | Soul |
| Wisdom | Rulers | Reason |
| Courage/Fortitude | Auxiliary Guardians | Spirit |
| Temperance/Moderation | Submission by all to rule | Alliance between reason and spirit |
| Justice | Everyone doing his/her own thing | Harmony among all parts, not being ruled by Spirit or Appetites |
Why Bring Up Virtues?
- Guardians don't seem to live a happy life
- The goal is to make the whole city happy (collectively), not just a particular group or to maximize individual happiness
- Individuals will be sufficiently happy doing what they are meant to do: fullest potential/capacity for purpose
