Parts
City Soul Body
Rulers Reason Head
Auxiliary Guardians Spirit (protective, lively) Heart
Craftsmen/Workers Appetites and Desires Stomach, Gonads
Virtues
Virtue City Soul
Wisdom Rulers Reason
Courage/Fortitude Auxiliary Guardians Spirit
Temperance/Moderation Submission by all to rule Alliance between reason and spirit
Justice Everyone doing his/her own thing Harmony among all parts, not being ruled by Spirit or Appetites

Why Bring Up Virtues?

  • Guardians don't seem to live a happy life
  • The goal is to make the whole city happy (collectively), not just a particular group or to maximize individual happiness
  • Individuals will be sufficiently happy doing what they are meant to do: fullest potential/capacity for purpose
