Alcohol

  • factor in many problem

Effects

  • Impedes nerve transmissions
  • Loss of fine muscle control
  • Leads to multiple diseases
    • liver disease
    • alcohol pellagra
    • malnutrition
    • polyneuritis
    • cancers
  • Impairs reflexes

Tolerance: ability to continue functioning with blood content; getting used to alcohol

Intoxication: 0.02-0.05 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)

  • Influencing factors:
    • body weight
    • alcohol content of drink
    • size of drink
    • time spent drinking
    • food already in stomach
  • Eliminating Factors
    • Oxidation process in the liver
    • Through breath (8%)
    • Through sweat (2%)
  • Binge Drinking
    • Men: 5+ drinks in one sitting
    • Women: 4+ drinks in one sitting

Laws

  • Minor in Possession (MIP)
  • Public Intoxication (PI)
  • Zero Tolerance (minors operating vehicle can't have any alcohol in system
  • Driving While Intoxicated (DWI): 0.08 BAC while driving
    • Open container: no alcohol within reach of driver
    • Intoxication Assault: someone drunk hurts someone in a wreck
    • Intoxication Manslaughter: someone drunk kills someone in a wreck

  • May irritate throat, redden eyes, increase pulse, and cause dizziness
