Stress
Stress and Psychological Health "Stressed" is "Desserts" spelled backward :)
- Distress
- Negative Stress - physically and mentally damaging response to demands placed on the body
- Eustress
- Positive Stress - Produces a sense of well-being (competitive sports, test anxiety, graduation, marriage, new baby)
How do I know?
Manifestations:
- Emotionally - crying too much, irritability
- Mentally - hard to sleep, negative thoughts, feeling rushed
- Behaviorally - change in appetite, substance abuse
- Physically - nausea, feeling ill, headache, increased blood pressure
Coping with stress
Positive ways:
- Deal with the cause
- Put situation in perspective
- Pace yourself
- Laugh
- Develop quality relationships
- Time management
- Attitude Adjustment
- Balance Fun and Responsibility
- Exercise and eat sensibly
Self-talk
Constant interpretation of the different situations that individuals find themselves in throughout each day.
- Positive: "If I practice hard I should be able to perform that skill"
- Negative: "There is no way I can perform that skill"

Mental Health and Stress
Depression
Constant state of sadness, hopelessness, and inability to take pleasure in life
Coping (normally a mix of all three):
- Professional Counseling
- Prescription Medications
- Exercise
Suicide
Watch out for verbal, behavioral, and situational clues:
- Withdrawing from normal habits
- Self-Degrading talk
Eating Disorders
Mentally identifiable and potentially life-threatening
Fear of obesity and obsession over appearance
- Anorexia Nervosa (starvation or emaciation) — commonly associated with depression and suicide
- Bulimia Nervosa (binging and purging)
- Binge-Eating (eating too much)
- Activity Nervosa (working out too much)
Female Athlete Triad:
- Eating Disorders
- Osteoporosis
- Amenorrhea (no period; low hormone levels)
