Same-sex "marriage" (cont.)

Handout

Athenian Stranger Justice Kennedy
  • same-sex relations are unnatural because they are not procreative (teleology again)
  • we share nature with animals
    • we should not fall below nature of animals
    • animals "remain until the age for procreation virgin and unmarried"
  • natural relations should be pursued in moderation: chastity in general is good
  • Man needs to define self
  • definitions are evolving
  • we set our own destiny
Appeals to fixed human nature Makes claims at both a fixed and fluid human nature
  • "rules" that govern how we humans work/thrive
    • parameters for flourishing (εὐδαιμονία, eudaimonia)
    • There are consequences when these "rules" are broken
  • inconsistent

All of today's popular "hot topics" (gender, sex, etc.) all relate to the Philosophy of Man

Classic Moral Dilemma

David Papineau on Consciousness

Handout

Papineau, David. "Confusions about Consciousness." Richmond Journal of Philosophy. Fall 2003.

Dualism vs. Materialism

  • Materialist says consciousness is nothing more than neural impulses in brain
    • There is no self; "I" do not exist, only my brain
    • Everything "felt" or "thought" is just a complex illusion of the brain
