International Standards
Universal Education Standards
Would it be worthwile to have international standards for engineering?
Move toward this end is already beginning!
Two groups:
- West: ABET, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland
- East: China, etc.
Universal Licensure Standards
- Eur Ing (already accepted in 30 countries)
- American PE
Employer knows what he/she gets when hiring an engineer
Universal Ethical Standards
Too many differences between cultures
Whould everyone adopt the Western concept of "Professionalism"
Moral Dilemmas in the Internatinoal Arena
- exploitation; sweat-shops
Hanna's Dilemma:
- accept bad working conditions (but better than what workers would otherwise have)
- not accept job
