Why Are our Environmental Problems a Concern?

  • Anthropocentric
  • Non-Anthropocentric

Global Mass of Vertebrates on Land and Air

  • Humans and our livestock/pet contributions: 95% of all vertebrate contributions
  • We really are dominating this planet

Man vs. Nature

  • Nature won up until 1900
  • Man is currently winning since
  • Once we reach carrying capacity, we both lose

More emphasis on ethics between current society and future society, plants, animals, Gaia

Pollution Mitigation

No such thing as zero pollution: logarithmic scale.

Dose/Response scale: LD50 is point at which 50% of population will die if subjected to concentration.

Ethanol's LD50 is 10,000 mg/kg

Nicotine is 1 mg/kg

Body has mechanism to detoxify itself at safe levels.
