Graduate School

Top Ten Reasons

  1. Get to defer student loans
  2. Significant other hasn't graduated yet, stick around town
  3. Defer dress code — wear iPods/hats/PJs
  4. Defer contact with "real world" — getting to bed and getting up on time
  5. Want people to call you "Doctor" but faint at sight of blood
  6. Love taking classes, want to take even more
  7. Want more letters after your name — hope it boosts starting salary
  8. Love doing research — discovering and inventing new things, making your mark
  9. Want to be the world's expert at something
  10. Need for the job you want

Misconseptions

  1. Grad school is like undergrad work, but with more advanced classes (NO! it's all about research)
  2. Grad school can always be a fallback plan if I have trouble getting a job
  3. I can get the graduate degree I want anywhere
  4. Graduate degrees maximize my earning potential
  5. Grad school will cost me more money

Top Issues

  • Job or grad school (What is research?)
  • Which degree? (MCS/MEN, MS, PhD)
  • Which school? (TAMU, CMU, Calteck, tu?)
  • Which advisor? (Dr. A or Dr. B?)
  • Which topic? (incredibly interested)
