Graduate School
Top Ten Reasons
- Get to defer student loans
- Significant other hasn't graduated yet, stick around town
- Defer dress code — wear iPods/hats/PJs
- Defer contact with "real world" — getting to bed and getting up on time
- Want people to call you "Doctor" but faint at sight of blood
- Love taking classes, want to take even more
- Want more letters after your name — hope it boosts starting salary
- Love doing research — discovering and inventing new things, making your mark
- Want to be the world's expert at something
- Need for the job you want
Misconseptions
- Grad school is like undergrad work, but with more advanced classes (NO! it's all about research)
- Grad school can always be a fallback plan if I have trouble getting a job
- I can get the graduate degree I want anywhere
- Graduate degrees maximize my earning potential
- Grad school will cost me more money
Top Issues
- Job or grad school (What is research?)
- Which degree? (MCS/MEN, MS, PhD)
- Which school? (TAMU, CMU, Calteck, tu?)
- Which advisor? (Dr. A or Dr. B?)
- Which topic? (incredibly interested)
