World Food Crisis
We've highlighted a lot of the good things, but there are some bad things that we need to talk about.
Health is number 1 health risk: kills more than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined
- Iron deficiency: most common malnutrition
- Iodine deficiency: single most common cause of brain damage
- World Food Programme
- Esp. in Sub-Saharan Africa
- 1 G people over-nourished (obese)
- 1 G people are hungry
- 60% women
- 98% live in "developing countries"
- 5 million children die from malnourishment
- 66% (2/3) are in Asia and Pacific
- 65% live in only 7 countries:
- India
- China
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Bangladesh
- Indonesia
- Pakistan
- Ethiopia
Percentage of household income spent on food:
- US: 16%
- Nigeria: 73%
- Vietnam: 65%
- Indonesia: 50%
