World Food Crisis

We've highlighted a lot of the good things, but there are some bad things that we need to talk about.

Health is number 1 health risk: kills more than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined

  • Iron deficiency: most common malnutrition
  • Iodine deficiency: single most common cause of brain damage
  • World Food Programme
  • Esp. in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • 1 G people over-nourished (obese)
  • 1 G people are hungry
    • 60% women
    • 98% live in "developing countries"
    • 5 million children die from malnourishment
    • 66% (2/3) are in Asia and Pacific
    • 65% live in only 7 countries:
      • India
      • China
      • Democratic Republic of Congo
      • Bangladesh
      • Indonesia
      • Pakistan
      • Ethiopia

Percentage of household income spent on food:

  • US: 16%
  • Nigeria: 73%
  • Vietnam: 65%
  • Indonesia: 50%
