Overview of meiosis: how meiosis reduces chromosome number

After the chromosomes replicate in interphase, the diploid cell divides twice, yielding four haploid daughter cells. This overview tracks just one pair of homologous chromosomes, which for the sake of simplicity are drawn in the condensed state throughout (they would not normally be condensed during interphase). The red chromosome was inherited from the female parent, the blue chromosome from the male parent.
